Question by Bluemoon: Which month is the best time to visit Hawaii?
I’m planning to take a vacation to Hawaii with my family. I was wondering when the best time to visit Hawaii.
1) Money-wise
We would like to avoid high season (peak season).
2) Weather-wise
We would like to avoid hot and humid weather. We prefer dry(less damp) weather.
Which months would be the best to travel to Hawaii for my family?

The weather in Hawaii is much the same year round, although it is a little hotter in the summer. Rainfall depends more on the side of the island you are on than on the season, although there is more rainfall in the winter. For example, on Kauai, Princeville is wetter and Poipu is drier. On the Big Island of Hawaii, Kona is drier and Hilo is wetter. You can’t altogether avoid humidity, because the moisture always comes in from the ocean.
The two peak seasons are summer school vacation and from Christmas through solar and lunar New Year. October or March-April are relatively low-season months with good weather. If swimming in the ocean is something you want to do, keep in mind that in the winter the north sides of islands can have very rough surf. It is very beautiful, but not safe for kids.

My favorite month to travel to Hawaii is October. It is my birthday month, so I am kind of prejudiced, but it is a great month in Hawaii. No longer high season, all the kids are back in school, holidays have not arrived yet, rainy season has not arrived yet, weather is perfect.
I have been in January and I found it to be a little cooler than I like. I went one year in June and it was a little too muggy (and windy). I am going in April this year, so I don’t know how I’ll like it. But I have never had a bad time in October, so that month gets my vote.
With its positioning on the calendar, a lot of times you can get some great deals too!
Hello Bluemoon,
I would suggest the last weeks of october or the first of november.
Why?
It’s the perfect balance between low-season’s rates without crowds and very good weather.
It’s been a winner for me.
That being said, Hawaii weather is something you should not worry about.
Seriously. It’s a true paradise all year round.
Yes there are differences between winter and summer weathers, but you are on an island, a small island. That means you can move around and find a sunnier spot in a matter of minutes. This is magic!
And when you get a little rain, we are not talking bad weather here. We are talking tropical weather with warm temperatures and some short showers in the afternoon. Still paradise. The islands need this water to fill the stunning waterfalls you find everywhere!
If you are still looking for the ultimate sunny experience, there are some specific regions on each island that you should look for. For example, the Kihei-Wailea area on Maui is a sure bet with blue sky almost everyday (same for Kona on Big Island). The Hana area, on the other hand, is beautiful but gets rain almost everyday (same for Hilo on Big Island)!
If i where you, I would do this:
- First, decide when you want to go to get good rates and avoid crowd (my pick: october-november)
- Then choose the island you want to visit (this is more about what you want to do with your family (activities, specific sites you want to explore, etc.).
- Then, have a look at some good Online Hawaii Weather Guides (see sources) to pick the right region for you based on the moment of your visit (ex.: if you choose Kauai go for Poipu).
Book your flight and enjoy!
Hope this help.

It’s very crowded in the summer, and hotter than it is the rest of the year, so you probably want to avoid that time of year, especially late summer (i.e. August).
Winter is nice, but it rains more in many parts of Hawaii. If you go in the winter, avoid late December and early January because a lot of people go there for Christmas break.
Spring or fall are good times of year to go because it’s not too hot, and because not many people’s kids can get time off of school then so it’s not very crowded.
